Know, Apply, Will, Do

I had a phone call this morning from someone who I thought might have been interested in our Adult Martial Arts classes here near Odenton, Maryland.

It was a phone call I get at least once a week, each time from a different person, but each time, I know within moments how the conversation will go and how it will end.

When most prospective applicants call MDJKD, they ask questions regarding logistics.

Who teaches the classes?

What do I need to bring?

When are the classes?

How do I apply for membership?

These are the questions of someone who is looking for the knowledge they need to apply, because they have the will to do so.

Often times, this person knows little to nothing about Bruce Lee or Jeet Kune Do, they just know that they need to get in better shape or have realized they do not know how to defend themselves.

That was not the call I got this morning.

These calls usually starts with a caller telling me everything they know about Bruce Lee and Jeet Kune Do.

The majority of that information will be incorrect or only half true.

It will likely be drawn from fictional biographies of Bruce Lee such as "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" or "Birth of the Dragon".

The caller will tell me that they have read the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, possibly several times, but will only refer to it as "his book".

They will likely pronounce it "Jet Kune Do", as in an airplane that is going to take off, and tell me how Bruce Lee developed it from "Wing Chung".

My response is always the same, "Well, if you're interested in taking your first steps on the path of Jeet Kune Do, I have an opening tonight or tomorrow at 7pm, which works best for you?"

Their response will either be to ignore me and tell me some other piece of trivia or ask me an equally trivial question about Bruce Lee.

Occasionally, one will actually schedule an Introductory Session, but won't actually show.

Bruce Lee was fond of German philosopher Johann Wolfgang van Goethe's maxim, "Knowing is not enough, we must apply.  Willing is not enough, we must do."

You probably already know everything you need to know to get in better shape.

You know you need to stop eating junk, eat smaller portions, and eat more vegetables.

You know you should get a personal trainer, join a box fitness program, or call us at Maryland Jeet Kune Do.

You may know those things, but will you apply that knowledge?

You may be willing to develop a meditation practice, but willingness will not actually move you to sit down for 10 minutes a day.

You know you need to pay more attention to your spouse or your children, but how and when will you actually apply that knowledge?

You're willing to do the work to make your dream job a reality, but will you actually do it?

What do you know that today, you will apply?

What would you will for your life, that today, you will actually do?
