Wasting Time Will Kill You! (Adult Martial Arts in Severn)

I just turned 40 two months ago.

For many, that is a turning point.

The introspection that follows can be sobering as you look back across the life you have lived, the decisions you have made, and results of those decisions placing you where you are.

It is even more sobering when you realize that you may not be given another forty years.

This morning I got a phone call from a prospective client who wanted to ask me questions about how we teach Jeet Kune Do here near Severn and what the differences are between our program and other martial arts.

He informed me he had been reading about Dan Inosanto and he was a big Bruce Lee fan.

I didn't answer his questions.

See, the man in question had come in to MDJKD last month and scheduled an Introductory Session.

He then missed his Introductory Session and did not call us before hand to say he was not going to be able to make it.

He later rescheduled his Introductory Session for the next day and was informed that if he missed it again without informing us, his application to join would be rejected.

No call.

No show.

Jump forward to this Friday, I received an e-mail from him, no acknowledgement of the past discussion, asking for details about the MDJKD program.

Remembering him from last month, I ran a search through the MDJKD system to find out that not only had he no call-no showed on us last month, but had done so in 2015 and 2017.

So, on the phone this morning, I told him that his application had been rejected and wished him the best of luck.

See, when he didn't contact us to let us know he wouldn't be showing up for each of those Introductory Sessions, he had stolen time.

He had reserved time that otherwise would have gone to a dedicated MDJKD member.

He had taken an opportunity that could have gone to another prospective applicant.

Jeet Kune Do is a highly individualized path of training.

It is not uncommon for myself or another instructor to tailor an entire lesson plan just to meet the needs of the people we know will be attending.

The members who train with us do so with inspiring levels of dedication to the path.

They are giving their time to their fellow practitioners to help each other move further along that path of Jeet Kune Do.

"If you love life, don't waste time, for time is what life is made of." - Sijo Bruce Lee

Where in your world are you wasting time, and bottom line, wasting your life?

Is your diet "starting tomorrow"?

Will you get off the couch and start exercising "later"?

Are you spending time on scrolling Facebook when you could be reading a book that will help educate you, expand your horizons, or teach you the next step to achieving something in your life?

Are you wasting time with people or in relationships that won't help you achieve your goals or build the life you want?

Are you spending your life in a job that is going nowhere because you think, "this is just how it has to be"?

If you love your life, don't waste time today.

Start plotting out where you waste the most time in your life and look at ways to minimize it.

And my friend, if are looking to develop the will power and self-control to live your life on your own terms, don't waste time.
