Giving Without Attachment

Have you ever known someone who did all the right things only to find out later that they had all the wrong reasons?

Have you ever realized that you were helping someone just so you could get some benefit from them.

Once, one of my mentors purchased several hundred dollars worth of rotisserie chickens to hand out to the homeless.  As he drove from camp to camp, he filmed himself on Facebook live and spoke of generosity and spirituality.

Later, we went through the pilot of his new martial arts life-coaching business.  In addition to the training, we filmed videos and served as backdrop for his videos and marketing material.

At the end of the month, he gave us a few hundred dollars so we could buy more chickens and film ourselves handing them out to the homeless, making sure to use the right hashtags so the footage would properly market his program.  We went to buy the chickens, but we told each other that we felt very uncomfortable with this plan.

We weren't feeding the homeless because this program had helped us become better men.  We were using the hunger of the homeless to market the program.

We handed out the food, but nothing was filmed.  We informed our mentor that we did not feel comfortable using the needs of others as a means to an end.

Later, I decided to sever ties with this mentor.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says, "When you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others."

In the Diamond Sutra, the Buddha said, "...in the practice of charity, the Bodhisattva should be...without any attachment to appearance."

Where in your life have you encountered someone who does things for others, but only so they can get something in return?

What can you do today to help someone else, with no regard for reward, or thanks?
